Why women are forbidden to prostrate

Sashtang Pranam: The tradition of saluting in Indian culture is going on since ancient times. It is believed that worshiping not only brings blessings, but it also symbolizes that a person has given up his pride. It has been said in the scriptures that by performing a obeisance, one gets the virtue equal to a yajna. In the scriptures, dandavat i.e. prostration has been described as the best. Let us know what is the importance of prostrating and why it is forbidden for women to do it.

Dandavat Pranam is considered a process of worship. In the Shodashopchar worship method, God is worshiped with sixteen different remedies. In which the final treatment is considered to be prostration. Prostration dandavat pranam means giving up the ego and surrendering oneself to God. Usually, in the posture of prostration, the salutation is done in any temple and place of pilgrimage. It has been our tradition to lie down and prostrate at the feet of our gurus.

What are its benefits:

  • 8 parts of our body touch the earth while performing prostration. In this state, our mind becomes calm and we are able to absorb the positive energy of the earth.
  • When a person worships with the intention of dedicating everything to God, then a feeling of freedom from worldly sufferings arises in him. Which gives relief from mental stress. Proshtanga posture is a yoga posture, so it also removes physical tension.

Why women are forbidden to prostrate

Worshiping women is considered inappropriate in the scriptures. According to the scriptures, the woman’s womb and her breast should never touch the ground. Because women maintain a life in the womb and breasts nourish that organism.
